Here's my very brief intro to Habermas from the first day:

Start with a historical and sociological study of the public sphere
  • Warning: a lot of students find H a bit tedious, certainly a lot of reading for this week, but it’s good for you

Whether or not you agree with H’s interpretation (course certainly offer critiques of it), text the definitive one on the public sphere
  • Traces out the relationship between publicity and liberal democracies and markets
  • Argues that the equality offered by markets key to the equality offered by liberal democracy (from parity as private commodity owners‡parity in general)
  • Public sphere enabled the emergence of human beings as we now know it, replacement of force by reason as base for public debate
  • Also offers narrative of demise of the public sphere through consumerism, through demands for social equality
